1. CURRENT ARTICLE

You are probably aware of the media exposure there was last month about changing the clocks ahead to daylight savings and checking your smoke alarms. I’m sure everyone changed their clocks  but very few  checked out smoke alarms.

On March 2, 2008, in Hamilton, Ontario, 5 people died as a result of a house fire. Three of the dead were young children. Once again, the smoke alarms were not working. What is it going to take to get adults to check their smoke alarms? Your kids are counting on you!

On April 3, 2008, 10 people died in a fire in Pennsylvania. Almost all of them were children. House fires happen. Smoke alarms buy you time to get out. Make sure they work.

Here’s the article.

When did you last test your smoke alarms?  Are you sure they work properly?

We were called to a house trailer fire with the ambulance.  When we arrived, the trailer was fully engulfed in flames.  The firefighters quickly put the fire out but it was too late.  Two adults had died in their beds.  The carbon monoxide had killed them without even waking them from their sleep.

The children weren’t so lucky.  All four of the children ranging from ages two to ten were found at the back door, burned beyond recognition.  They tried to get out but couldn’t.  The door had been latched closed and it was too high for them to reach.  They died a horrible death.  I witnessed the autopsies and will never forget it.  The fear and pain those poor kids went through is unimaginable.

This is a horrible story, but tragedies like this happen every day.  To think that this could have been prevented.  The smoke detectors didn’t have batteries in them.  Had the smoke alarm gone off, I’m sure the parents would have woken up, gotten everyone out, and in a couple of days and the kids would have gone to school just like any other day.  Fires in homes will continue to happen.  They don’t have to if you are careful, but if one does start in your home you need every possible second of warning to get you and your family out alive.  Functioning smoke alarms give you those precious seconds.

Make sure your smoke alarm is functioning properly!

THINK & BE SAFE AT ALL TIMES!

If you didn't check your detectors at the time change, please do it now. Procrastination kills.

3. It Was In The News

ABBA drummer dies from cuts
Many of us remember ABBA. The drummer from the band is dead. Apparently, he must
have tripped or he fell against a glass door in his dining room. He broke the glass
and suffered serious cuts to his neck. He wrapped a towel around his neck but collapsed
in the garden and bled to death.

Man runs naked in streets because of mouse
This isn't really safety related but it is interesting. Talk about panic. Panic
in emergency situations can kill. This is is a panic story.

A man in Germany ran out of his house half naked because there was a mouse in
his living room. Imagine if he was holding a ladder for someone or acting as a safety
for another worker in a potentially dangerous situation?
He was wearing his boxer shorts and slippers. Nothing else. The man told police
