“I wasn’t thinking” is a poor
excuse for
any incident, but it’s a common one!
How many times do we hear this
expression? We say it ourselves when we do something that may have caused us
an injury. When questioned, often the reply is “I just wasn’t thinking.”
It’s true, in most of those cases we weren’t thinking. Well…we might have
been thinking about something, but it sure wasn’t the task at hand. We try
to use “I just wasn’t thinking” as an excuse. It seems the more serious the
event, the more pitiful the excuse is.
Here’s what I mean:
You are
doing a task you’ve done a thousand times before, but this time you cut your
hand and need five stitches. When questioned how it happened you might say,
“I just wasn’t thinking.” That might be the end of it after getting stitched
up and filling out the WCB paperwork.
Now take a situation where you were driving along a highway and pulled out
to pass someone. At the time, you weren’t thinking about your driving. You
didn’t shoulder check, and you forced another vehicle into the ditch. The
vehicle rolled, killing two of the occupants – including an 8-year-old girl.
In court, when questioned about how it happened, I don’t think “I just
wasn’t thinking” is going to get you out of trouble. When it comes to safety
we have to be thinking all the time – the consequences are just too high.
Always think about safety so you
don’t have to say “I just wasn’t thinking.”

How Men
Get Hurt
In 1999:

There were

Fish Cost Him His Life
In
Germany, a man was fishing on a lake. As he was holding the rod, a fish
took the bait and eventually the rod right out of his hand. Not wanting to
lose the rod, he took off his clothes and swam after it. By now, it was
about 100 yards off shore.
A
witness said he saw the man reach the rod, but he then stopped moving. The
witness swam out to help him and brought him back to shore. He was too
late. The man was pronounced dead.
